Materials

9 (10, 11, 12, 13, 15) balls Chunky Mochi by Crystal Palace Yarns – color 803 (Violets Rainbow)

2 stitch markers

2 stitch holders or scrap yarn

4 (5, 5, 5, 6, 6) buttons; 11/8"/28 mm

 

Needles

#10½ needles – 16" and 29" circular, and double-pointed needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)

 

Gauge

12.5 sts and 17 rows over St st = 4"

 

Instructions:

PATTERN STITCH:

Seed Stitch (multiple of 2 sts)

Row/Round 1: *Knit 1, purl 1; rep from * across.

Row/Round 2: Knit the purl sts, and purl the knit stitches from the previous row or round.

Repeat Row/Round 2 for pattern.

 

NOTES: The body of this cardigan is worked in one piece to the armholes, then divided to work the fronts and back separately. When working each section, place the remaining stitches on holders or scrap yarn to be worked later.

An odd number of stitches are cast on to begin the sleeves so that when working in Seed Stitch two knits or two purls do not line up at the beginning/end of each round.

 

BODY:

Using long circular needle, cast on 86 (100, 110, 122, 136, 148) sts. Work back and forth; do not join.

Work 2" in Seed Stitch, ending with a RS row. Place markers for sides 20 (24, 26, 29, 32, 35) sts from beginning and end of round with 46 (52, 58, 64, 72, 78) sts between markers for back.

Work 3 (5, 5, 5, 5, 5) rows of St st, begin with a WS row.

Next row (inc): Knit to 1 st before first marker, increase 1 st, knit to 1 st past second marker, increase 1 st, knit to end – 88 (102, 112, 124, 138, 150) sts; 1 st increased on each front.

Work 3 (5, 5, 5, 5, 5) rows even.

Next row (inc): Knit to 1 st past first marker, increase 1 st, knit to 1 st before second marker, increase 1 st, knit to end – 90 (104, 114, 126, 140, 152) sts; 21 (25, 27, 30, 33, 36) sts each front and 48 (54, 60, 66, 74, 80) sts for back; 2 sts increased on back.

Repeat last 8 (12, 12, 12, 12, 12) rows once more – 94 (108, 118, 130, 144, 156) sts.

Work even until body measures 8.25 (8.75, 8.75, 8.75, 9.25, 9.25)", end with a WS row.

 

ARMHOLES:

Knit 20 (23, 25, 26, 30, 32) sts for right front, BO 4 (6, 6, 9, 8, 10) sts for armhole, knit 46 (50, 56, 60, 68, 72) sts for back, BO 4 (6, 6, 9, 8, 10) sts for armhole, then knit to end. Each piece will now be worked separately to the shoulder.

 

LEFT FRONT:

Continue St st and BO at beginning of RS rows, 3 sts 0 (0, 0, 0, 0, 1) time, 2 sts 1 (1, 1, 1, 2, 1) time(s), then 1 st 1 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4) time(s) – 17 (19, 20, 21, 22, 23) sts. Continue even until armhole measures 5.25 (5.25, 5.5, 6, 6.25, 6.75)", end with a RS row.

 

NECK:

BO at beginning of WS rows, 3 sts 0 (1, 0, 0, 0, 1) time, 2 sts 2 (1, 2, 2, 2, 1) time(s), then 1 st 1 (2, 2, 2, 2, 2) time(s) – 12 (12, 14, 15, 16, 16) sts. Continue even until armhole measures 7.5 (7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5)", end with a WS row.

BO at beginning of RS rows 6 (6, 7, 8, 8, 8) sts once, then 6 (6, 7, 7, 8, 8) sts once.

 

RIGHT FRONT:

Continue St st and BO at beginning of WS rows, 3 sts 0 (0, 0, 0, 0, 1) time, 2 sts 1 (1, 1, 1, 2, 1) time(s), then 1 st 1 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4) time(s) – 17 (19, 20, 21, 22, 23) sts. Continue even until armhole measures 5.25 (5.25, 5.5, 6, 6.25, 6.75)", end with a WS row.

 

NECK:

BO at beginning of RS rows, 3 sts 0 (1, 0, 0, 0, 1) time, 2 sts 2 (1, 2, 2, 2, 1) time(s), then 1 st 1 (2, 2, 2, 2, 2) time(s) – 12 (12, 14, 15, 16, 16) sts. Continue even until armhole measures 7.5 (7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5)", end with a RS row.

BO at beginning of WS rows 6 (6, 7, 8, 8, 8) sts once, then 6 (6, 7, 7, 8, 8) sts once.

 

BACK:

BO 3 sts at beginning of next 0 (0, 0, 0, 0, 2) rows, 2 sts at beginning of next 2 (2, 2, 2, 4, 2) rows, then decrease 1 st each end every RS row 1 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4) time(s) – 40 (42, 46, 50, 52, 54) sts.

Continue even until armhole measures 7.25 (7.25, 7.75, 8.25, 8.75, 9.25)", end with a WS row.

 

NECK & SHOULDERS:

Knit 15 (15, 17, 18, 19, 19) sts, attach a new ball of yarn and BO the next 10 (12, 12, 14, 14, 16) sts for neck, then work to end. Each side will now be worked separately to the shoulder.

BO at each neck edge 3 sts once, and at the same time, BO at each armhole edge, 6 (6, 7, 8, 8, 8) sts once, then 6 (6, 7, 7, 8, 8) sts once.

 

SLEEVES:

Using double-pointed needles, cast on 39 (41, 41, 43, 45, 47) sts. Join to work in the round, making sure sts are not twisted. Mark beginning of round.

Work 2" in Seed Stitch.

Continue in St st, and at the same time, increase 1 st at each end every 10 (8, 4, 4, 4, 4) rounds 2 (3, 3, 3, 6, 6) times, then every 6 rounds 0 (0, 2, 2, 0, 0) times—43 (47, 51, 53, 57, 59) sts. Work even until piece measures 9.5 (9.5, 9, 9, 8.5, 8.5)", end last rnd 2 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5) sts before end marker.

 

SLEEVE CAP:

BO 4 (6, 6, 8, 8, 10) sts, then knit to end—39 (41, 45, 45, 49, 49) sts. Continue back and forth in St st.

BO 3 sts at beginning of next 0 (0, 0, 0, 0, 2) rows, 2 sts at beginning of next 2 (2, 2, 2, 4, 2) rows. Decrease 1 st at each end of every RS row 5 (5, 7, 7, 8, 9) times. BO 2 sts at beginning of next 2 (2, 2, 4, 4, 4) rows, then 3 sts at beginning of next 2 (2, 2, 0, 0, 0) rows—15 (17, 17, 19, 17, 13) sts. BO remaining sts.

 

BUTTON BAND:

Using longer circular needle and with RS facing, pick up and knit 31 (33, 34, 35, 37, 39) sts from neck edge to top of Seed St band of left front, then pick up and knit 7 sts along edge of Seed St—38 (40, 41, 42, 44, 46) sts.

Work 2" in Seed St. BO loosely in pattern.

 

BUTTONHOLE BAND:

Using longer circular needle and with RS facing, pick up and knit 7 sts along edge of Seed St band of right front, then pick up and knit 31 (33, 34, 35, 37, 39) sts to neck edge—38 (40, 41, 42, 44, 46) sts.

Work 4 rows in Seed St, end with a RS row.

Buttonhole row (WS): Work 2 sts, *k2tog, yo, work 5 sts, p2tog, yo, work 5 sts; rep from * 1 (1, 1, 1, 2, 2) more time(s), [k2tog, yo] 0 (1, 1, 1, 0, 0) time(s), work to end.

Continue in Seed St until buttonhole band measures 2". BO loosely in pattern.

 

FINISHING:

Weave in ends. Block pieces to measurements. Join fronts and back together at shoulders.

 

COLLAR:

Using shorter circular needle and with RS facing, leave a tail approximately 12" long and pick up and knit 7 sts along edge of buttonhole band, 13 (13, 14, 14, 15, 15) sts along right front neck, 20 (22, 22, 24, 24, 26) sts along back neck, 13 (13, 14, 14, 15, 15) sts along left front neck to button band, then 7 sts along edge of button band—60 (62, 64, 66, 68, 70) sts.

With RS facing, slide sts back to right end of needle. Using long tail from beginning of picked up sts, BO 7 sts over buttonhole band, then slip remaining st back to left needle, turn.

Slide sts to left end of needle to begin with a WS row. BO 7 sts over button band, then work in Seed St to end—46 (48, 50, 52, 54, 56) sts.

Next row, slip 1 st, knit over purl sts, purl over knit sts across to end. Repeat last row until collar measures approximately 4 (4.25, 4.5, 4.75, 5, 5)". BO loosely in pattern.

 

Weave in ends. Sew sleeves into armholes. Sew buttons to button band opposite buttonholes.
