This is the season to shift into neutral. In Spring 2009, we’re getting down to basics beginning with a fresh, neutral complexion that’s a flawless palette for barely-there blush. The accent is on a smooth, creamy, natural look completely devoid of sparkles or bronzer.
If you must glitter, glitter only slightly…and only at night.
To achieve the look, use a foundation that perfectly matches your own complexion. Then add soft cheeks in pale peach, and stay away from stripes of shade for contouring. This season, we don’t want to sculpt our faces to create a shape that doesn’t already exist; we want to gently highlight our natural features with soft, pretty washes of color.
For daytime, the eyes become a focal point in smoky sweeps of color, but now in softer, paler shades than what we saw in the winter. Drama is achieved with mile-long lashes that can be achieved using many of the new lash-lengthening mascaras available at the cosmetics counter. These are often two-step processes, but the look you achieve is well worth the effort. For the lids, purple predominates: violet eyeliners and lilac shadows are the new, hot colors. But be sure to check out the pastel collections from style-setters like Dior, NARS and Jill Stuart.
For night time drama, choose the bright, bold blue that's making such big fashion news this season. Shiseido presents a brilliant shade that will put the focus entirely on your eyes -- a fantastic shock of color set on a pale, perfect palette. (Cover photo and eye shadow provided by Shiseido Co.)
We’re seeing a more natural look in brows: thick and luxurious to frame and bring drama to the softer colored eyes. If you’re enhancing your brows be sure to use a pencil or powder that precisely matches your natural color.
As always, the lips are luscious in reds that range from tomato to deep crimson. But, not for day wear! Save them for special evenings. Choose either matte or gloss in whichever shade of red best suits your complexion. They range from orangey hues to brilliant blue-reds.
For luscious everyday lips, the major runways are emphasizing nudes and pale tones or a sheer wash of berry. Think soft and simple, and avoid the overdone look of dark colored liner and a thick layer of color.
Spring 2009 is all about natural, wearable colors that gently enhance your own fabulous features. They’re a traditional choice that stays in style and will give you many seasons of classic, yet contemporary, beauty. |
