CoatOne of the absolute must-have garments for this autumn is definitely the jacket or “short coat” as some designers call it. And the terrific thing for all of us trying to keep up with the latest trends is that we have a wide range of styles and approaches from which to choose and fit our own personal style preferences.

For example, the classic boxy jackets of Coco Chanel are back in vogue, and the Chanel collection features both tailored and modernized versions of her traditional approach. From the double-breasted styles so loved by former First Lady Jackie Kennedy to the closer fitting looks featured in the latest Chanel print ads, these tailored jackets are definitely hot for the season.

Also the design collection of MaxMara is showcasing the tailored jacket particularly in luxury fibers such as cashmere, camel and silk. The wonderful drape of these fine textiles is shown in this haute-couture line, and they shine even more when a jacket’s style is transformed into a full-length coat.

The military influence is another distinct trend for jacket designs this fall and can be accessorized for work, play and even evening outings. Banana Republic features various styles a la militaire along with Chloe and DSquared2.

TrendsOne more type of jacket for the young and young at heart is fashioned after the biker styles of Harley Davidson aficionados. But these jackets don’t have to be crafted of leather, oh no. These days biker chic comes in denim, silk, even cashmere and it’s all about the detailing. As long as the jacket has some hardware with studs, chains, buckles, etc., it will fit the style and keep you right in fashion.

Of course, one the best ways to tell if a trend is going to be a major hit in the ready-to-wear market is to check out what the sewing pattern companies are offering. All the major brands – McCall’s, Simplicity, Vogue, Butterick, Burda – have fabulous jacket patterns on the market such as the one featured here that showcases the military style, the tailored look, the classic menswear blazer and a more loose-fitting, feminine option.
