Oh! BabyAutumn brings cooler weather and new fashion trends, and just as adults and teens enjoy staying current with seasonal styles, so do our children and babies. We also admit that it’s oodles of fun to dress up our little ones with pizzazz and individuality while keeping them snug and warm. So let’s see how the latest fashion trends have been translated by some of our favorite knitwear designers and yarn manufacturers.

Cabled Coat with HoodWhen we think of the latest styles for our favorite wee ones, of course, Debbie Bliss comes readily to mind. After her years of designing for the Gap Baby, Debbie transitioned to a wildly successful career as a children’s knitwear designer of handcrafted garments. The Cashmerino Jacket with Vent beautifully illustrates her love of classic, traditional lines as does the Prima Smock Dress with its decorative yoke and pockets. Then as we’d expect from a Londoner, Debbie ably demonstrates the effectiveness of cabled detailing in children’s clothing too. The unisex Rialto Aran Millie Hooded Cardigan and her awe-inspiring Cabled Coat with Hood are just two examples of her use of the Aran influence.

Babushka HatAnother British designer who has quickly become a rising star in the knitwear fashion industry is Louisa Harding. Her new pattern books are eagerly anticipated each season, and her latest collection of baby projects – Bizoo Bizu #21 – is chock full of adorable designs for babies and toddlers up to three years old. We know one peek at these patterns will get your fingers itching to deck out your little girls in the feminine Kashmir Baby Clara Cardigan and your boys in the military/sailor-styled Oli Woo Jacket. You can also add jazzy styles to their hat collections and still keep them comfy and warm in the adorable Kashmir Baby Tickle Hat and the unisex Babushka Hat.

Baby Bamboo Cabled SweaterChildren’s wear powerhouse Sirdar and the related brand Sublime are two additional great sources of stylish inspiration for dressing up your precious babies and children. From the preppy, dapper lines of the Baby Bamboo Cabled Sweater to the feminine drape of the Snuggly Cable Poncho and Beret and from the flirty femininity of the Sublime Little Rose Cardigan to the sailor-inspired styling of the Hooded Pixie Coat, these designs are classic, timeless investments in your children’s wardrobes.

Caramel TunicOf course, American fashion mavens can look closer to home for fall fashion inspiration. Berroco’s Creative Director Norah Gaughan and her design team have created a terrific variety of projects for babies and children this season. Keep your babies up with the return to chunky knitwear and stripes with the Comfort Chunky Wee Willie Layette, or dress up your little girls in the feminine Comfort Baby Lacey Mae Layette. Then for older girls – sizes 4 to 10 – Berroco #291: Comfort for Girls is the perfect choice. All of the styles in this collection are marvelous, but we especially recommend the Aran-inspired, cabled Comfort Bonfire Tunic and the classic Caramel Tunic.

Comfort DK Tiny Biker JacketThen last but certainly not least come some of the most innovative baby outfits we’ve seen in ages. The adorable collection Wacky Baby Knits from Alison Jenkins is jam packed with whimsical styles for your wee one’s everyday fun wear and also for special occasions such as Halloween. From the trendy Comfort DK Tiny Biker Jacket to the all-American Baseball Jacket and the adorable Ballerina Socks, this new book will inspire you to think outside the box when outfitting your precious new addition. We also love the sensational all-in-one outfits, especially the cute Hooded Frog Suit and the “udderly” delightful Cow Suit & Hat.
