Instructions:

Cast on 1 stitch.

.) Knit into the front and back (kfb) of the stitch (2 sts).

.) With yarn in front (wyif), slip 1 as if to purl (sl1p), move yarn to back, kfb (3 sts).

.) Wyif, sl1p, move yarn to back, kfb (4 sts).

.) Wyif, sl1p, move yarn to back, K1, YO, K to end.

.) Repeat row 4 until there are 22 stitches on the needle.

.) Wyif, sl1p, move yarn to back, K1, YO, K2tog, k to end.

.) Repeat row 6 for 2 inches.

.) Divide for buttonhole: holding 2 dp needles in your right hand, designate one needle as the “front” needle and one as the “back” needle. Sl1p alternately to the front and then the back needle until all stitches have been slipped and there are 11 stitches on each needle. (Hint: use needles of two different colors or put a point protector on the end of one of the needles to help you distinguish “front” from “back”.)

.) On the “front” needle only, attach another strand of yarn and work in K1,P1 ribbing for 1 ½ inches (or long enough to slip bow through easily). Since you have an odd number of stitches, you will *K1,P1, repeat from * on the right side. Wrong side is worked *P1,K1, repeat.

.) Cut yarn. Reattach at base of “back” needle and work in ribbing to match front.

.) When both sides of the buttonhole are equal, rejoin, reversing the process used in row 8.

.) Following instructions for row 6, work neck portion of scarf until it is desired length (14 – 16 inches).

.) Make buttonhole #2 following instructions in rows 8 - 11.

.) When buttonhole is completed, work bow for 2 inches as follows: wyif, sl1p, move yarn to back, K1, YO, K2tog, K to end.

.) Decrease for bow: wyif, sl1p, move yarn to back, K1, YO, K2tog, K to last 5 sts, ssk, K3.

.) Repeat row 15 until 5 sts remain.

.) Wyif, sl1p, K2tog, ssk, K1 (3 sts).

.) Wyif, sl1p, K2tog, psso.

.) Finish off last stitch.

Finishing:

Weave in ends. Block.
