Entrelac looks difficult but if you can knit and purl you can do it. Don't try to figure it out, just blindly follow the instructions and it will work out.
Materials Needed: Needles: #7 – 16" circular needles and #7 dpn set Yarn: Caledon Hills™ Worsted Wool exclusively from Yarnmarket. One skein each of 7 colors or use 3 colors, repeating the colors, as desired. Colors used here: 863 – Albion Sunset; 813 – Raccoon; 811 – Red Maple; 829 – Log Cabin; 807 – Pampas; 805 – Limestone; 899 – Wild Irises Gauge: 20 stitches in ribbing = 4"
Instructions: CO 84 stitches for Small (Medium 90, Large 96.) Any Multiple of 6 will work. Note that if you tend to cast on tightly, it is best to use at least one size larger needle for casting on. Join in the round being careful not to twist the stitches. Knit in 1X1 ribbing (k1, p1) for 1-1/4"
Base Triangles – The Entrelac design begins with base triangles. In each odd row of a triangle, you knit the stitches that you just purled plus the next stitch from the circle, thus adding one stitch on each odd row as follows:
Row 2: p1, turn Row 3: k2, turn Row 4: p2, turn Row 5: k3, turn Row 6: p3, turn Row 7: k4, turn Row 8: p4, turn Row 9: k5, turn Row 10: p5, turn Row 11: k6 – Do not turn; One triangle is complete.
Continue with the stitch immediately to the left of the most recently knit stitch. Repeat rows 1-11 around the circle until all ribbing stitches have been used. You should have 14 (15, 16) little "bubbles" on your circular needle (see 1st photo above right.) If you could flatten out the bubbles, each would look like a little triangle (see 2nd photo right.)
For the first round, work with the wrong side of the hat facing you, picking up stitches, purlwise, along the side of the base triangles. In later rounds, you will have rectangles rather than triangles from which you will pick up stitches (see 3rd photo right.)
Row 1: [WS] Attach color 2 to the corner of the first triangle closest to your right needle; pick up (purlwise) and p6 sts
last picked-up st onto the left needle; p2tog with next st on the needle; turn work. Note that in following rounds, you will pick up stitches along the previous round's rectangles rather than triangles.
Even Rows 2-10: [RS] k6; turn work.
Odd Rows: 3-9: [WS] p5; p2tog; turn work
Row 11: [RS] p5; p2tog; do not turn work; first rectangle is complete. Repeat Rows 1-11 around the circle until you are back at the beginning of the round.
Second Round – Left Slanting Rectangles For the second round, work with the right side of the hat facing you, picking up stitches, knitwise, along the side of the previous round's rectangles.
Row 1: [RS] Attach color 3 to the corner of the first rectangle; pick up (knitwise) and k6 sts evenly along the first rectangle; sl last picked-up st to the left needle; ssk with next st on the needle; turn work.
Even Rows 2-10: [WS] p6; turn work.
Odd Rows: 3-9: [RS] k5; ssk; turn work
Row 11: [WS] k5; ssk; do not turn work; first rectangle is complete. Repeat Rows 1-11 around the circle until you are back at the beginning of the round.
Third Round – Right Slanting Rectangles: Repeat first round of right slanting rectangles.
Fourth Round – Left Slanting Rectangles: Repeat second round of left slanting rectangles picking up only 5 stitches evenly spaced along the edge of the rectangles.
Fifth Round – Right Slanting Rectangles: Repeat first round of right slanting rectangles picking up only 5 stitches evenly spaced along the edge of the rectangles. Photo 2 Photo3
Top Triangles – begin crown
Row 1: [RS] pick up (knitwise) and k4 sts along edge of rectangle; sl last picked-up st to the left needle; ssk with next st on the needle; turn work.
Row 2: p4, turn work
Row 3: k3, ssk, turn work
Row 4: p3, w&t
Row 5: k2, ssk, turn work
Row 6: p2, w&t
Row 7: k1, ssk, turn work
Row 8: p1, w&t
Row 9: ssk, do not turn work. One triangle is complete. Continue until you have worked triangles around the entire circle.
Next Row: k around circle. This knit round eliminates the triangles and all remaining rows are knit normally. You should have 56 (60, 64) stitches on your needles. For the remaining rows, decrease on odd rows and knit around on even rows as described below. Note that you will need to switch to dpn as the number of stitches becomes fewer.
Row 1: Decrease – *k4, k2tog; repeat from * around circle; for medium and large, you will have a few extra stitches to knit at the end of each decrease round.
Row 2: k around
Row 3: Decrease – *k3, k2tog; repeat from * around circle.
Row 4: k around
Row 5: Decrease – *k2, k2tog; repeat from * around circle.
Row 6: k around
Row 7: Decrease – *k1, k2tog; repeat from * around circle.
Row 8: k around
Row 9: Decrease – k2tog around circle. For different sizes, if more than 12 sts remain, repeat decrease row 9. Cut a long tail. Weave tail through the remaining stitches. Weave in all ends.
Knitting terms: w&t To work a purl side w&t, place the yarn at the back of the work; slip the next stitch from left needle to right (purlwise); draw the yarn around the slipped stitch, back to the front and return the stitch back to the left needle before turning the work and continuing with the pattern.
ssk Slip the next 2 stitches, one at a time as if to knit, to the right needle; insert the left needle into the fronts of these two stitches and knit them together. Where to buy Caledon Hills™ Worsted Wool: Yarnmarket.com
