Knitch Magazine

This original pattern by Britt Raubenheimer was one of the prize winners in the TKGA/Yarnmarket Knitting Design Contest held earlier this year. It's crafted in cosy warm Misti Alpaca Chunky yarn and has a pretty accent in Misti Alpaca Hand Paint Chunky yarn.

Materials:
1 pair USA 9 needles
1 16” USA 9 circular needles
1 stitch holder
Yarn A: Misti Alpaca Hand Paint Chunky, color 04 (100g, 109 yds): 2 balls
Yarn B: Misti Alpaca Chunky Baby Alpaca, color 403 (Charcoal, 100g, 109yds): 6 balls
Tension: 15 sts and 22 rows to 10 cm (4”) square.

Back: Cast on 74 sts in color A and knit 1 row. Change to color B (charcoal) and continue in stocking stitch for 12 rows, then dec 1 s both sides every 6^th row 3 times. After 34 rows, inc 1s both sides every 6^th row 3 times. Work even until measures 12.5” (66 rows). For armhole, bind off 2 sts both sides twice (66s). When measures 20.75” (106r), bind off all sts.

Front: Cast on 74s in color A and knit 1 row. Switch to color B, and continue for 12 rows as 31 sts stocking stitch in color B (charcoal), 12 sts in color A in pattern, and 31 sts in color B. Continuing with pattern, dec 1 s both sides every 6^th row 3 times. After 34 rows, inc 1s both sides every 6^th row 3 times. Work even until measures 12.5” (66 rows). For armhole, bind off 2 sts both sides twice (66s). When measures 20.75” (106 rows), bind off 17 sts for left shoulder and knit to end. On WS, bind off 17 sts purlwise for right shoulder and then place remaining 32 sts on holder for neck.

Left Sleeve: Cast on 32 sts in color A and knit 1 row. Switch to color B and continue for 4” (22 rows) as 10 sts stocking stitch in color B, 12 sts pattern in color A, 10 sts stocking stitch in color B. Continuing in colors and pattern, inc 1s both sides every 6^th row 10 times (52s). When measures 16.5” (88 rows), shape for armhole as bind off 2 sts both sides twice, dec 1 st both sides EOR 9 times, bind off 3 sts both sides once, and bind off 4 sts both sides once. To work shoulder extension, continue in pattern but work 2 center stitches in stocking stitch for 24 rows. For extension across back of neck, bind off 6 sts then continue for another 24 rows. Bind off remaining 6 sts.

Right Sleeve: Cast on 32 sts in color A and knit 1 row. Switch to color B and continue for 4” (22 rows) as 10 sts stocking stitch in color B, 12 sts pattern in color A, 10 sts stocking stitch in color B. Continuing in colors and pattern, inc 1s both sides every 6^th row 10 times (52s). When measures 16.5” (88 rows), shape for armhole as bind off 2 sts both sides twice, dec 1 st both sides EOR 9 times, bind off 3 sts both sides once, and bind off 4 sts both sides once. To work shoulder extension, continue in pattern but work 2 center stitches in stocking stitch for 25 rows. For extension across back of neck, bind off 6 sts on WS then continue for another 23 rows. Bind off remaining 6 sts.

Finishing: Sew sleeve shoulders to front and back pieces. Using color A and circular needles, pick up 31 sts across back (dec 1 st in center back), place marker (pm), 6 sts along side of neck, 28 sts from front holder by dec 2 sts either end, 6 sts along side of neck, and pm (70s). Work 4” repeating the 10 sts of the pattern 7 times. Bind off all sts.
